Sir
I am writing this letter with great concern about the latest unknown activities of someone in the community who is exercising some kind of authority.
It happens almost overnight with a lot of surprises for the people of Dundee. No notices were given. There are no posters of information or any kind of warning for drivers in Dundee. Maybe you can guess what I am talking about. Speed bumps in all kinds of forms. Flat ones. Round ones. High ones. Just about any kind. The fact that they are so different prove that people without any knowledge must have worked on it, planned it and may I say, decide where the bumps must be.
Not everybody in Dundee drives these big four-wheelers that actually belong only in the veld. Also true is that nobody in Dundee, thanks to the poor street lighting that makes it almost impossible to see further than 50 meters, can see these unknown bumps before it is too late. And imagine what a wonderful experience motorcars and passengers have: either a free flight in the air or a sudden stop in the middle of the street at night. Personally, I cannot drive over most without my car scratching it or the chassis of my car being scraped. Even if I just stop in front of it, and then drove over first gear with the utmost care over, the bump scrapes my car.
Now understand me correctly, I am not criticising the fact for the need of speed bumps. I love them if they are in places well planned and well executed. But sorry, these are not well planned nor are they executed correctly. This was mostly a waste of time and money.
There are more potholes that could have benefitted from the material used than putting up some speed bumps without any reason. Then I must ask: is it done according to the law? There are no signposts to warn anyone of any of these speed bumps. I hope the person(s) or organisation will be ready for any legal actions for damages to vehicles and properties due to the fact that there is no warning signs. I personally must make use of a different route now to get to work or to town.
This may be one of the actions in our community that represents the fact that uninformed people make uninformed decisions with unforeseen consequences for the people of this town.
A concerned citizen.
I have received numerous complaints w.r.t the latest addition of speed humps in Dundee.
Speed humps do serve a purpose if they are designed properly and placed in areas where necessary i.e. at schools, busy intersections, etc. However it seems that some of them have been over designed and no proper warning signs have been displayed. I am also not aware of any consultation in this regard, hence the surprise and outcry from the public.
We have discussed the matter at our Ward Committee meeting and the Techical Department will ‘cut’ the bumps and see to the putting up of warning signs.
Anthon Raubenheimer: Ward Two Councillor.
