Hill hang-out spot should be banned?

This really bothers me because nobody seems to care about our youth destroying their lives

Editor – I write to you because there is something that bothers me. It always has and forever will if nothing is done about it.

I am a young adult who resides in our small town of Ladysmith. The issue that provoked me to write this letter is the youth who hang around on the La Verna Hill. I pass there almost each and every day and I am not proud to say that the things our youth do there are disgusting. I’ve passed numerous times and the kids who hang around there are always up to no good.

Just the other day, I came across a bunch of kids in school uniform drinking and smoking dagga. This really bothers me because nobody seems to care about our youth destroying their lives.

During my school years, that place was always a hot-spot for kids who wanted to go and do all sorts of bad things. Everybody who passes by there will tell you that what people do there is disgusting, considering that it is a public place, not to mention it being so close to the CBD.

Police vans often drive past, but the officers never bother to stop and examine what goes on, and that’s not because they are not aware of the happenings there. Police, I think, generally just don’t care!

Not only is it a hot-spot for school kids who drink and smoke, but it is for criminals as well. That place has become a hive of criminal activities too and it makes it harder for innocent people to go up or down the hill without fearing not only for their belongings but their lives too.

Entabeni (the hill), as they call it, is also a place where “lovers” meet and do all sorts of sexual things. Keep in mind that the hill is also a hang-out spot for school kids. Now imagine the things they see and pick up from these “adult lovers”.

Something needs to be done about that place – either they ban people from hanging around there (especially kids) or they make proper use of the camera that was put on top of the hill.

Police also need to do random patrols, especially on Fridays!

Parents should also talk to their children about that place and enforce a strong punishment if they’re ever found there. So should schools, because kids who hang around there are always in uniform.
