Madam – It is evident after this latest batch of local elections that change is coming to South Africa.
We voted last week, and the entire process was simple, efficient and amazing. IEC officials knew what they were doing, and despite the fact that we knew many of them must have been exhausted, all voters at the station were greeted with smiles and helpfulness.
It was refreshing to have such incredible service delivery, so I take my hat off to everyone at the IEC.
Afterwards, I followed the results process with interest. It was anticipated the ruling party would retain Newcastle, and I want to wish the new administration everything of the best.
We will certainly miss Mayor Afzul Rehman – he was eloquent and openly participated in community discussions on social media, no matter how much popular opinion was against him.
Mayor Rehman, (or should I say former mayor?), please know Newcastillians are proud of you and your numerous achievements. We hope your replacement will continue where you left off and continue to develop our beautiful city.
What became apparent quite quickly across South Africa with the elections, was that the ruling party seems to be losing favour among voters. I hope this signals the start of change to come.
We need to hold people accountable for their actions, and this is certainly the first step in the right directions.
To all incoming ward councillors, both new and old, we the community look forward to working together hand in hand with you to make our city a better place. Congratulations to everyone.
Proud voter
