Letter: Shoddy workmanship makes for untidy town
It was all very wonderful - the music, the speeches, and all the humdrum about the re-vitalisation of the city centre, but unfortunately there is a legacy - the pavements. After all the wires and cables were torn out, the repair of the paving was done rather shoddily.

Madam – Walking from the library towards the Pick n Pay/ Impuphu centre I had a few thoughts which I would like to share:
Pavements – the Cinderella of road building.
It was all very wonderful – the music, the speeches, and all the humdrum about the re-vitalisation of the city centre, but unfortunately there is a legacy – the pavements. After all the wires and cables were torn out, the repair of the paving was done rather shoddily.
As a result walking on a pavement has become a hazardous undertaking, even for the fittest of us, and even near the centre of town.
I think it is safe to say that once a road or pavement is dug up, it will never be the same again and I will dare to predict that the laying of the fiber-optic cables, currently in progress, will prove me right.
That is rather a pity, because with a bit of care and expertise it is possible to restore any building site to its original faultless state.
After all, if you think of it, the Romans knew how to do it. And that was 2 000 years ago.
M.
