Editor – With the school farewells that are taking their toll in the month of August, I would like to warn all parents about the whole matric dance thing.
Matric farewells are great for a class of matric students who have worked all year long to secure great marks that will determine their spots at university. It is a great time for the kids to be all together, dressed smart and beautiful, and it is also a great platform to say goodbye to your matric friends, but I can’t shake off the idea of warning parents about what happens after the ceremony organised by a particular school.
This, by most, is taken lightly, which is why I want parents to be aware of the happenings they call “after parties”.
This is where all the kids end up as soon as they part ways with teachers and parents, who go to watch their children at these matric dances. “After parties” is where all the wrong gets done – drinking, smoking and oftentimes sexual intercourse.
Boys generally save up money they get from their parents during these occasions, so when it is time for them to leave the farewell function, they have already made plans to go to a particular house and invite girls. This is where all the ‘fun’ begins. After some rounds of drinking and smoking, girls tend to be weak and boys start to take advantage.
