Editor – Please allow me, through the medium of your newspaper, to respond to an article published in your sister newspaper (Times of Ladysmith dated September 9).
At the outset, CPFs (Community Police Forums) were formed in their respective areas to ensure that residents are not culprits of frequent house break-ins, hijacking, murders, etc.
As far as patrolling the respective areas is concerned, it is more a voluntary task that also endangers the lives of the so-called patrollers who take their chances to ensure that their area of jurisdiction is safe from unsuspected souls who intrude the area unexpectedly. The community (men only) are not compelled to join in these so-called patrolling or driving around aimlessly in keeping an eye on their neighbourhood.
All CPFs need to liaise with the respective stakeholders, viz SAPS, security companies and the K9 Dog Unit, who have trained personnel to assist in patrol duties, as they are well equipped when confronted by suspected thugs or thieves who inhibit our area.
Why endanger the lives of the community who are vulnerable and scared when confronted by these so-called thugs? Let the SAPS, K9 Unit and security companies handle the crisis of ensuring that the community is safe at all times, to patrol at any given time and respond to the scene of the crime once notified.
As mentioned, patrolling is voluntary and CPFs have taken it upon themselves to assist these so-called trained personnel in apprehending would-be thieves or thugs.
