We are not all ‘open books’

Why on earth does every move you make in your personal, or professional life, need to be the topic of conversation?

Editor – I’ve written about how much I’ve appreciated this town and the people in it, but I have decided to write about something a little different.

The only reason I am writing this letter is because I know many of you think this, but no one has the guts to say this. I didn’t grow up in a small town where everyone knows everyone else, so this “kleindorpie” syndrome is incredibly frustrating for me.

Why on earth does every move you make in your personal, or professional life, need to be the topic of conversation for people in this town? (No, I’m not attacking anyone specifically, but most of you who are reading this can identify with me on this exact problem)

Yes, I am young, and yes I have many friends. It does not mean I am “dating” them or I’m doing inappropriate things every weekend. Every person goes through this stage once in their life, where they are convinced that going out and having fun is the only relaxation available to you. So you can’t sit and think you are better than someone else if you know for a fact that you’ve been through it too.

I’ve always been a very private person, and trying to keep people out of your personal life in this small place is a special kind of ‘hell’. But I will say one thing and one thing only: I have nothing to prove to any of you and that’s the way it’s going to stay.

So keep on talking and I will keep on walking.
