Editor – “Money makes the world go round”? Well, my experience of going from a millionaire to hitting rock bottom feels like a nightmare I wish would come to an end.
Don’t get me wrong; having so much money never made me feel superior, nor did I look down upon people. Coming from a background where I was not able to go to school with proper attire and having days when I slept without food, I will never forget my roots and where I came from!
However, this financial battle I’m currently facing made me wiser and has been a lesson learnt the hard way. Trusting individuals and helping family members ruined my entire life. Today, even my so-called family have turned their backs on me because I do not have money.
Days and nights I pray that the Almighty can free me from the debts I am left to face daily. I am not going to bore you with my sad life story. However, I would like to educate fellow readers not to be foolish and fall victim!
This is how it started; having family as partners was my downfall. However, I didn’t have a choice; I was the hard worker and the one with the wisdom, while the others had financial backing. As time went by, the business boomed. Everything was smooth sailing. No one questioned or bothered to lend a hand; all that mattered was their salary paid at the end of the month!
In the interim, out of my savings (being a humble and trustworthy person), I helped family and friends financially. Literally any Tom, Dick or Harry who needed help, I assisted them without hesitation. As time went by, the business started taking strain; not having money to pay all the expenses started adding up. My partners didn’t know the constant battles I was facing.
Towards the end, the partners pulled out and today I sit with the burden of debtors wanting payment. Ironically, all the good-time friends and family who had been around for my success suddenly no longer answered my calls… Or paid back the money I had lent them.
As I approach the bitter end, I now realise how false they were. But no good deed goes unpunished.
I have learned my lesson.
