To me you were a wise man, who managed to amaze me in the finest ways possible. I recall numerous occasions when I would call Laurence Potgieter to help edit my poetry.
For him it was never a big deal, all he wanted in return was ‘a lekker cup of coffee and asked where the ashtray is.’
We would sit down and talk for hours on end; it was always a great privilege to share company with him.
My freshest memory is from about three weeks back when I gave him a ring to assist me with a short story I had done. He said: “Give me an hour, I have something to sort out,” five minutes later there he was knocking at my door.
We enjoyed a cup of coffee and started writing; he lost me along the way. I had to stop him occasionally asking him what he had meant by some of the words he used.
It made me realise that he had a dictionary printed in his head. Oh my dear pal, I’m going to miss you and all the fun times we shared.
May God purify your soul, rest in peace.
