Do you dare be an individual in Ladysmith?

Take off your blinkers and dare to leave the flock

Editor – Is it possible to be an individual in this town without the tongues all wagging and judging you when they don’t have all the facts?

The cliché says that variety is the spice of life, but heaven forbid if someone “steps out of line” and dares to be different in Ladysmith.

You get a little black mark against your name, it grows and it grows, and soon you’re the black sheep of the family, permanently.

And let me tell you from experience that once you have a shady reputation in this neck of the woods, it sticks!

The stories never die and people talk about you till doomsday!

This tirade comes in the wake of meeting someone new and everything going swimmingly for a while.

Then the nosy parkers start talking and saying: “What are you hanging around with so-and-so for?” and “Haven’t you heard that he / she is a this or a that?” or whatever the case may be.

And people don’t seem to have the intelligence to make up their own minds either. They will shun you outright if they are told you are no good.

People should be judged on their actions, not their beliefs!

Everyone differs in everything from taste to opinion to religion – so isn’t it time to live and let live?

All the Holy Rollers don’t seem to know that they should first take the log out of their own eye before trying to pull a splinter out of someone else’s. Judge not lest ye be judged yourself, remember?

Anyway, I fear that all these words will not do an ounce of good. People will still point their fingers and tell their (misinformed) tales.

Sheep are among the dumbest creatures on the planet, so it’s sad that everyone feels they have to conform at the expense of their intellect! Take off your blinkers and dare to leave the flock.

As Shakespeare once said: “There are more things in heaven and earth than dreamt of in your philosophy.” Hope that makes you think a bit as you carefully hide the skeletons in your closet before dressing up smart for church.
