LETTER – Some are more equal than others

Equality is not even on the map

Sir
Regarding last week’s page three, I believe the new Gandhi Museum is a tribute to Dundee and the hardworking Museum staff who did not get some handout from Government – well done.

But a precautionary note on who has the biggest claims to struggle in South Africa.
We always are celebrating struggle.
Or commemorating it.

There have been many struggles. Blacks struggling for rights. Afrikaners struggling against concentration camps and imperialism.

Indians struggling against discriminatory laws. English-speakers struggling against job reservation for Afrikaners and so on and so forth.
Struggle must now move on to a new struggle. Apparently all are equal.
That is not true.

Equality is not even on the map.
Jobs for pals, the new racism, affirmative action – all these things erode equality and breed contempt.
Let us start a new struggle – where all are truly equal. I for one will drink to that.
