Editor – Prostitution, they say, is the oldest profession in the world.
But does it have to reveal its ugly face in Ladysmith?
All over the world, this activity is practiced discreetly and, need I say it, professionally with some decorum.
But in Forbes Street, the trade is a disgrace, not because the transaction is conducted brazenly, but more so because the majority of those “sellers of bodies” are children.
And the majority of “buyers of that service” are men old enough to be parents and grandparents of those children.
Has our society lost its moral compass to such an extent that this activity continues unabated in broad daylight or till the wee hours of the night?
Are the police blind to this activity, or is it a case of turning a blind eye for some fringe benefit?
How would the police or our municipal officials react if one of those children plying the illicit trade was their daughter or granddaughter?
Forbes Street is a residential area.
It is home to a school that is over 100 years old and an Alma Mater to thousands.
The street also borders the uThukela District Municipality offices.
What impression do these children portray to residents and visitors?
The authorities have an obligation to get those children off the streets. Now!
