Fix sewage leaks so that stream doesn’t stink

Not only is the sewage problem a health risk, but it is also adversely affecting businesses in the area

Editor – I write this open letter to you as, despite the many complaints lodged with uThukela District Municipality, your municipality has failed to ensure that the sewage spills in and around the stream known as Stinkspruit are repaired and prevented.

This Stinkspruit stream runs through the centre of the Ladysmith residential area and is not only an unacceptable, disgusting and constant smell for residents, but poses a major health risk to residents and children of the area, as well as to the thousands of residents who live downstream of the Klip and Tugela rivers.

This sewage problem directly affects residents in Francis Road, Farquhar Road, Victoria Road and Rowsell Lane, as well as Egerton Primary School, Andante School and Ladysmith High School, numerous kindergartens, Juana Maria Old Age Home and the scattered B&Bs.

Not only is the sewage problem a health risk, but it is also adversely affecting businesses in the area and if not resolved, will eventually lead to business closures and the loss of jobs.

I request that you ensure that all the sewerage system problems in the area are fixed without delay in a way that will prevent them from recurring and that any future sewerage problems are fixed timeously and within a reasonable time period that your municipality pledges to residences.
