Editor – I would like to request that my article be printed in the weekly Gazette.
This is regarding unfairness and injustice by a primary school.
It pains me to write this article, as we have never had a problem with said school, but I feel it is necessary to avoid other parents going through what we are being put through.
My child has been at the school from Grade R.
She has been an outstanding top achiever throughout her schooling career, always coming in first position every term, as well as every year.
She has even represented the school on numerous occasions and has excelled there as well – thus making her popular with her peers.
They look up to her as a role model, as she is always ready and willing to lend a helping hand to her peers, as well as her teachers.
She is currently in Grade 7 and has been thoroughly wronged by the school, as they have broken down and demotivated my child by making her a deputy head girl and choosing a learner as head girl whom they know has not excelled in the way my child has.
When we approached the school, we were told that my child wasn’t chosen as the head girl solely because she is not outspoken. I find that not a good enough reason to take away what is rightfully hers, because she is always helping her teachers and peers, and is always taking part in spelling bees, etc…
She has also taken part and been given an award at the Uthukela GET Awards, etc.
So by the school telling us she wasn’t chosen because she is quiet makes absolutely no sense to me.
From the kids to the parents and some teachers of said school, it came as a shock when my child was not given the head girl position, as everyone knows her credentials.
Teachers are afraid to speak up, as they do not want to break the school’s code of conduct, but as a parent I have every right to fight for what I know my child deserves.
We in no way have anything against the child or the family of the child who is currently the head girl, as we have said on numerous occasions. We have even suggested that it would not be fair to de-badge the child, so we ask that they share the position.
In all the years, everyone knows that the top achiever gets the head girl position and without prejudice, I can say that my child has always been number one.
The teachers can testify and if they can’t, surely they have records of all the kids’ academic performances – she has ALWAYS come out FIRST, ALWAYS!
All I ask is that the school admit to their mistake and correct what they have done – let the girls share the responsibility of being head. Admitting to your mistake doesn’t make you small or big… Lead by example, as you are educators and some of you are parents.
Put yourself in our position, as we all know deep down in our hearts that my child has worked extremely hard over the past seven years and she will continue to shine…
She deserves this position; if the school can just sit and think, they will realise what they have done.
I urge you to please print this article, as we will not accept this injustice.
This is for parents who may face the same situation – I’m not only fighting for my child, I’m fighting so this never happens to any other deserving student again.
