Learner-educator behaviour is a two-way street

Nowadays we see that educators and learners associate on a 'friendship' basis

I have been following the recent commentary in the Estcourt News pertaining to behaviour of educators at Drakensberg Secondary School (DSS) with interest.

To this debate, I would like to add my views. The subject of behaviour from educators and learners is, in my opinion, a two-way street.

Educators must also give respect to gain respect and the same is applicable to the learners too. I think that these days there isn’t that strict educator-learner relationship.

Nowadays we see that educators and learners associate on a ‘friendship’ basis. Often at school events and in the corridors, I’ve seen this kind of behaviour.

To me, it gives the learner the impression that their educator is a ‘buddy’ and this is where the disrespect starts to creep in.

Learners and educators have to understand that at school, there is a definite hierarchy and only when this is observed, can mutual respect be earned.
