Editor – On April 6, I had the privilege of attending the Autism Awareness Day held at Ladysmith Provincial Hospital. When my colleague and I arrived there, we were greeted with smiling faces of employees of the hospital, who were eager to help us find the location of the presentation that was to take place that morning.
I heard about this event through a phone call a few weeks back, with one of the ladies that had set up the whole presentation, and was so excited to hear that they had read my previous letter about the need for autism awareness events and a support group in our community.
When we arrived, both myself and my colleague were welcomed so wonderfully, and were shown to a table where there were pamphlets available to take home with you, as well as blue ribbons and little laminated badges with “Autism Awareness” printed on them. We were told to take as many as we’d like.
To say I was highly impressed with all the pamphlets and little goodies is an understatement.
The fact that the hospital staff had completely gone out of their way to make this a non-slapdash event was so greatly appreciated.
The presentation was so informative and it was lovely to see other people at this event who were/are going through similar situations at home and socially with their children and family members.
I also wrote down my contact number for the Autism Support Group who meet at the hospital once a month.
I cannot wait to hear when the next support group is!
Once again, thank you, thank you, THANK YOU to Ladysmith Provincial Hospital for organising this event.
