With regards to the article that appeared in last week’s Estcourt News, entitled ‘Ripped rubbish bags ruin residential streets’, I would like to add my opinion.

The root of this problem is the residents who either could not be bothered or are unaware of the correct refuse removal days.

However, I think that the former is probably the most obvious case. In the Forderville area, we experience this almost every day.

People don’t even care to place their dirt in the correct bags and sometimes when there are a number of smaller plastic bags left on the pavement, municipal staff does not stop to pick it up.

When this happens, then it is inevitable that roaming dogs will rummage through the packets and eventually all the dirt is left scattered on the roadside.

When people place their rubbish out on the incorrect day, they fail to bring it back inside when they realise that their waste will not be picked up that day. Engaging these people, often neighbours, is a difficult process and most people become defensive.

I’ve even had one person asking me: “Are you the municipality?”
