Senior citizens pay tribute to the CanSA Relay for Life

The joyous expression on the faces of all those who walked spoke a million words. They walked, they talked, they sang, they laughed, they cried. This was true comradeship, undoubtedly

Members of the Estcourt Senior Citizens Club join all seniors in extending their sincere thanks to the organisers of the tenth annual CanSA Relay for Life, which as in the past years, was a tremendous success.

It is also a remarkable achievement that over the past ten years, a total of R1 million was raised for this worthy cause. Congratulations!

When Anil Sookraj, the founder of this great movement in our town, initiated the first Relay ten years ago, with the assistance of a voluntary team of helpers, business houses and other public spirited institutions, he did not probably visualise the magnitude of this mammoth task but plodded along each year with only one thought … to bring comfort, relief and hope to those suffering from this dreaded disease.

In an article that appeared in a local publication, Mr Sookraj painstakingly portrays his struggles, having lost his dear mother, a cousin and a friend to this scourge.

Being a man of action, his conscience led him to embark on this project, the CanSA Relay for Life – Estcourt.
The Al-Imdaad Foundation has also played an important role in this humanitarian project.

Several others have contributed towards the success of Relays over the years, financially and in other ways.
Space does not allow us to individualise (our expression) all the donors and their contributions but rest assured that it made a difference with no contribution being too small.

The joyous expression on the faces of all those who walked spoke a million words. They walked, they talked, they sang, they laughed, they cried. This was true comradeship, undoubtedly.

The extremely cold weather, the icy wind, even the heavy downpour did nothing to dampen the spirits of these men, women and children, they just walked.

The refreshments, particularly the hot drinks that were a feature of this year’s rally, were most welcome. It definitely warmed up their spirits. Thank you, sponsors.

Whilst we are aware of the great challenges that lie ahead, we realise that for Mr Sookraj, his dedicated team, the sponsors, families that have lost loved ones and everyone else, the greatest joy will come, the day this Relay will come to an end, when cancer will be conquered.

God bless.
