Sir
We always hear of this much-vaunted word Ubuntu. It is supposed to mean a concept of care and compassion. How does this exactly fit in with the 57 murders a day reported in SA and the over 20 000 rapes (in the Courier rape articles two weeks ago) reported nationally? Obviously, not everyone out there has heard of or agrees with Ubuntu. Gandhi said if you want to check on the state of a nation see how it cares for its animals. Yes, that’s true, and I would like to extrapolate the great man’s ideas to include ‘see how the environment is cared for’.
On Sunday evening, about five drunken youngsters (one was a girl) were walking up Victoria Street talking and shouting loudly and rudely.
Oblivious to their surroundings they maliciously smashed a glass bottle on the road opposite Pro Nobis School.
My first thought was: I hope you slip and cut yourself on the glass you have purposely left on the road.
Then I remembered: it is wrong not to take care of your fellow man – it is not Ubuntu.
Just Brian.
