Sir
My wife and I woke up to a quiet morning on January 1 and lazed in bed with tea watching world news on TV. We were then disturbed by noises in and outside the premises where we live (Chrichelle – between doctors and radiologist). I got up, dressed hurriedly and went outside to see no less than three men violently kicking and stamping on what was a man lying on the ground.
My wife phoned the police (Dundee); it was now 11:30 am, and no police had arrived yet! I intervened by trying to protect the man being assaulted. I was not phased in the least when one of the aggressors suggested or more instructed me to leave as they had things under control (my wording). Included in the bystanders were at least two security guards who were also simply ‘observers’, it seemed. I am unable to recall precisely what precipitated the attackers to stop their vicious animalistic frenzied assault.
The men doing the beating slowly dissolved and disappeared leaving me with the two guards. The man was by now unconscious from the beating and unable to respond to any of my questions. The guards were still present so I asked them to help lift the unconscious man into their van and take him to hospital.
Their reply was that they were not permitted to do such a thing – some policy (my wording). I was not able to communicate with the assaulted man so returned home (25 metres away) brought my car close to him then managed to get him into the back, then took him to emergency/outpatients at the Dundee hospital. I explained to the staff on duty the events and to my amazement found their actions somewhat unprofessional by beckoning to the man semi-conscious to get up out of the car and get into the wheelchair.
The man was at best semi-conscious. After a short time the man bleeding from head and fingers and who knows where else, was bundled into the wheelchair and then into casualty. What a wonderful beginning to 2019 and Happy New Year for Dundee and South Africa!
