Editor – I used to be a very smug person… Every time I would drive into Estcourt and see how ugly and unkempt that town was, I would always say thank goodness I live in Ladysmith. The grass is cut and we have well-designed entrances to town.
Then I paid a visit to Newcastle and saw how a town should be kept clean, but still I would say to myself, at least we are not Estcourt. However, over time, my pride in our town began to slip.
No longer did our Ladysmith Black Mambazo tribute entrances look so neat. Long grass and litter began to overgrow the town, along with my pride. Slowly, everything that made Ladysmith great has become tarnished. Dilapidated buildings and shoddy repair work on our roads has turned Ladysmith into one of those places you do not mind visiting for a short while, but you would dread to actually live here!
