Virus means thinking out of the box

"My main worry is that small businesses will battle to recover from the shutdown..."

Sir – It is interesting how people have reacted to the 21-day lockdown. Many are simply moaning that they cannot get liquor or cigarettes although apparently in Dundee there are many ways to skin a cat…

Others are upset that they cannot jog. Or go to work. Which I get. My main worry is that small businesses will battle to recover from the shutdown. Taxis are businesses and are allowed to operate but we are not sure if these businesses are VAT registered.

Little businesses jump through all the hoops of legislation – be it labour laws, tax laws and health laws just to comply. Government does all they can to stop these little businesses from operating by putting in all kinds of restrictions – racial, tax or otherwise.

The Dundee area mainly has small businesses and when these go the town goes. There will be no money for shopping at the big franchise outlets. Should the SA Government apply to the IMF for a loan – which is becoming increasingly likely – they will have to shelve alot of racially-placed policies and free up the stifling labour legislation that actually encourages employers to hire less staff.

We have to think out of the box. This virus gives an opportunity to press the reset button. But unlike the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, where only one side admitted to atrocities, this virus will force everyone out of their boxes.
