“Councillors should take a pay cut”

The hard-pressed ratepayers have for a long time now been forced to fund parties and other nice-to-have-things

Sir
Many thanks for the incisive and balanced reporting on the 2020/21 Endumeni Budget that covered all aspects. A 5% rates increase in the scheme of things should not be on the cards. Councillors should look at taking a 50% pay cut, like I have, and many others have had to do – forced upon us by our employers.
Council work should in any case be voluntary and not be a paid job, funded by taxpayers.
The hard-pressed ratepayers have for a long time now, through a succession of mayors who have all messed up, been forced to fund parties and other nice-to-have-things, disguised as community empowerment. We all know that the tender procedure is flawed. Those fences around the two parks need to be probed.
To read that the maintenance budget is being cut is scandalous. We challenge Council to publish exactly what they have bought over the past year in terms of ofice chairs and other luxuries, while the roads go to pot.
Remember, the ratepayers fund municipalities and all you are doing is killing your own oxygen supply.
