Kareteka earn their provincial stripes
14 students earned medals and provincial colours for their efforts.
The South African Traditional Karate Council (SATKC) held its second annual National Karate Championships on March 29 in Vanderbijlpark.
The event was a joint venture between SATKC and Martial Arts South Africa (MASA), and included both traditional Japanese and Okinawan events, as well as Korean events.
A group of 14 karateka from Butokukan Newcastle attended as part of the Traditional Karate KZN team (TKKZN).
The following students earned medals at the conclusion of the competition:
Bobby Ding – gold in kumite; Jardine Singh – silver in kumite; Akira Singh – silver in kata; Henko Bruin – silver in kata; Chardy Beamson – bronze in kata; Damiksha Annathan – bronze in kata; Zarina Khan – bronze in kobudo; Frik Willemse – bronze in kobudo.
All members of Butokukan Newcastle who represented KwaZulu-Natal at the event were awarded full colours.
SATKC is recognised by the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) as an official national all-styles karate governing body and may thus award full National colours (Protea) to all athletes who represent South Africa as part of an official national team at international events.
