Breakwaters clinch the Triple crown
The team now holds all three NFWAA titles for this season.
Good things happen in threes for Breakwaters Angling Club.
The team was crowned the Triple Champions of the Natal Freshwater Angling Association (NFWAA), a culmination of a determined effort to clinch all three titles despite getting agonisingly near multiple times.
Midway through this season, the club lost two stalwarts, Manny Praag and the late Sunker Bhooli.
Reeling from this loss, Breakwaters took a unanimous decision this season to capture all three NFWAA titles in memory of its long-time angling partners and friends.
In the words of club management, there would be no settling for second best.
A daunting task of assailing peaks few have conquered, began with the final league encounter, a so-called straight duel between Itec Freespool and Breakwaters.
The latter won this contest.
The path to the Knock Out Final proved equally challenging, as Breakwaters was once again required to overcome Itec Freespool in the first round, Dannhauser in the semi-final and Riverside in the final.
Breakwaters negotiated each hurdle with aplomb to clinch the second title.
However, the ultimate prize up for grabs was to be found at the Grand Challenge, a tough contest which pitted Breakwaters against Freespool, now incensed with ending the winning streak and getting revenge for earlier defeats.
This titanic battle took place at Richgate Park’s Zone Four on May 18.
It was a day characterised by poor catches and anglers trying every bait, dip and trick to entice the fish to bite.
Ultimately, Breakwaters would once again emerge victorious with 41 points to Freespool’s 22.
At the announcement of the winners, the jubilation and excitement was palpable as emotional Breakwaters team members reaped the rewards of a testing season.
Humble in victory, Breakwaters’ captain, Monty Slabbert commended Freespool on a gallant and determined effort.
To his own team, Monty offered his gratitude for the sacrifices and commitment of members, some who travel from Secunda and Ladysmith to remain faithful to Breakwaters.
A celebratory function for Breakwaters and Stillwaters, all expenses paid, will be held at Kwadukuza Dam, near Ladysmith.
This will be followed by Breakwaters and Stillwaters Annual General Meeting, prize giving and awards function, as well as the NFWAA AGM on June 7 from 2.30pm in Dundee.
Anglers are now on a break from competitive angling until the 2014/ 2015 season casts off.
