Burnt End
The annual competition between the three zones of KwaZulu-Natal Country Bowls’ district competed in Empangeni last weekend.
These zones, Midlands, Northerns and Zululand, engaged in what was billed one of the closest battles in many years, with the lead changing after each session.
After four rounds, only three points separated the teams in the overall scores.
The men’s section was won by Northerns, which finished on 18 points and a large shot difference ahead, followed by Midlands (18 points) and Zululand (12 points).
Hosts, Zululand won the women’s section (20 pts), while Northerns (15 pts) and Midlands (13 pts) were close behind.
The overall winner, however, was Northerns on a total of 33 points, closely followed by Zululand on 32 and defending champions, Midlands rounding off the competition on 31.
At the end of the competition, players to attend Inter District trials in 2015 in Vryheid were announced.
The Northerns Zone, and in particular Newcastle players, are well represented in the squad, which participates in the inaugural Pr 10 Pairs competition in Richards Bay this weekend.
Representing Newcastle Bowling Club, having won their sections in the club play-offs are:
John Douthwaite, Trevor Douthwaite, Andy Crosbie and Bert Rodgers.
A total of 26 teams will participate at this event, with the winner and runner-up set to represent KZNCB at the National Play-offs in Port Elizabeth this September.
