Determination and a passion for running motivated Asha Ramsahayee to participate in her fourth Comrades Marathon on Sunday, June 1.

“This year’s Comrades was one of my best. I finished, but missed the cut-off time by 10 minutes,” said Mrs Ramsahayee.

“I really enjoyed it. The people, the noise and the atmosphere were all great.”

What made the Comrades especially enjoyable, were the spectators cheering the runners on, she said.

“If it were not for the crowds, runners would not make it. The spectators really encouraged them.”

As enjoyable as the race was, Mrs Ramsahayee said diligent training was required.

Participating in a marathon pushes runners to their maximum, and therefore vitamin supplementation, enough protein and mental preparation are also essential.

“The Comrades Marathon is called the ultimate human race, which it is. It is really tough, but I would definitely do it again.”

Although Mrs Ramsahayee has not received any medals yet, she is adamant that accolades are not the motivating factor for her participation in the gruelling race.

“If I tell people the pain is pleasure they will think I’m mad, but that is what it is for me.”

Mrs Ramsahayee first became involved in running five years ago.

“I used to do aerobics and I felt it was not enough. I then did the Memel Walk, and I told my husband one night that I wanted to do the Comrades. I felt if I could do 50km, I could do the Comrades Marathon. He got all the necessary information for me and even started training with me.”

After the sad passing of Mrs Ramsahayee’s husband, she dedicated this year’s Comrades to him and their children.

“My family has always supported and motivated me. Next year, I intend to bring home a medal.”
