Mervyn Maharaj finds more to soccer than meets the eye

“Firstly, soccer is not just a game. It can be a career. Secondly, soccer helps you stay clear of the wrong path in life, helps you make decisions, keeps you fit and instils a sense of discipline,”

At the tender age of seven, Mervyn Maharaj discovered there was more to soccer than merely kicking a ball around.

Soccer not only allowed Mervyn to de-stress at the end of a long day and actively enjoy the game he loved, but opened doors to life lessons he has come to value.

“Firstly, soccer is not just a game. It can be a career. Secondly, soccer helps you stay clear of the wrong path in life, helps you make decisions, keeps you fit and instils a sense of discipline,” Mervyn emphasised.

However, during his years playing soccer ,Mervyn, who plays as centre back for Stella FC, discovered there was more to the sport than met the eye.

“Soccer can be a cruel game and you can’t take it for granted that your team will win. You win and lose when you least expect it,” he laughed.

As a member of Newcastle Social Soccer League (NSSL) committee, Mervyn is not only an avid soccer player, but he also plays a role in Newcastle’s soccer community.

Mervyn had originally been part of the Fernwood soccer team when it was decided that teams should be affiliated with an organisation in town, he said.

With the establishment of NSSL, Mervyn was initially a representative for Fernwood’s team.

“I then became secretary and stayed to keep soccer alive,” he said.

Mervyn encouraged others to take up soccer, as strong friendships are formed on the field, and the sport’s survival in town can be ensured.
