Comedians, critics and cyber-warriors all got in on the action.

Hosts of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Brazil, were knocked out of the competition by a very thorough German side yesterday.

Subsequently, the ‘Twitterverse’ exploded, with the #BravsGer hash tag being tweeted a total of 35.6-million times during the broadcast of the game alone, making the match the most talked about sporting event in Twitter history.

While some tweets were hilarious, others were mean.

The Newcastle Advertiser compiled a list of some of our favourites.
