Burnt End

The all Natal men’s and women’s Singles Championships were hosted by Port Natal Bowling Association (Durban) last weekend.

Newcastle’s Alice Howe did exceptionally well to win her three sectional games to qualify, as the section winner, for the knock-out stages.

She then went on to win her next two games, to move into the quarter finals.

There, Alice came up against former Springbok and South African Singles Champion, Colleen Grondein, who proved too consistent on the day, thus putting an end to Alice’s excellent run.

Other KwaZulu-Natal Country Bowling players to do well were VJ Singh (Klipbank), Hannetjie Botha (Harrismith) and Barry Mutlow (Richards Bay), who all won their sections, but bowed out in the knock-out stages.

On the local front, the tabs in chicken competition, played on the recent public holiday, was won by Ernie Phillips, Roger Jackets, Gert Roos and Sue Hutchinson.

A number of Newcastle teams supported Ncandu Bowling Club’s sponsored day last Saturday, with the host club being perfect hosts, allowing the visiting Newcastle teams to take the first five prizes.
