Model jets break the silence
The Newcastle Model Aircraft Club flies on weekends, weather permitting.

Aviation enthusiasts got a whiff of jet fuel on Sunday.
With the sound of jet engines breaking the silence at Newcastle Airport, members of the Model Aircraft Club and guests took to the skies above town.
Quentin Ferreira provided some details of what went up.
“We normally host model jet pilots from Johannesburg, about four times a year. They enjoy it here because of the facilities – our runway is even, and the location is open and safe.”
Mr Ferreira said model jets were a great attraction, as the craft cost hundreds of thousands of Rand to purchase and maintain.
He encouraged residents to add watching a model jet fly, to their ‘bucket lists’.
“These are real jets, just on a smaller scale. Many even use regular jet fuel,” he enthused.
Among guests from Gauteng was Terry Hamilton, who was pleased that reports of rains and strong wind earlier in the day had proven inaccurate.
“These were actually pleasant conditions for flying,” he explained.
The Newcastle Model Aircraft Club flies on weekends between 9am and 12.30pm from the airport, weather permitting.
“Our club is open to newcomers and hobbyists. We can help a pilot from scratch until they take the first solo flight, and have knowledge to share.”
