Runners take the battle to the streets
Braving the early hours of the morning, runners met at Huttenpark Primary School and rose to the daunting challenge.
The annual Battlefields Marathon took place on Saturday.
Braving the early hours of the morning, runners met at Huttenpark Primary School and rose to the daunting challenge.
A staggering 352 participants from as far as Johannesburg and Durban entered the marathon. There were three divisions to enter: the 42 kilometre run, 21 kilometre run or the 10 kilometre run.
With the sun beating down, runners willed themselves mentally to cross the finish line.
In the 10 kilometre division, Bhekani Sithole clinched first place, with Thabani Shoyisa in second and Reginald Vusi in third place.
Rika Rossouw took first place in the women’s 10 kilometre division. Taryn Strydom secured second place and Frances Phillips came in third position.
In the 21 kilometre men’s division, Stembisa Ndaba came in first and was followed by Thulani Manana and Mandisa Kubheka in second and third place respectively.
Xoli Madida clinched the first place in the 21 kilometre women’s division, with Nicky Williams in second place and Candice van der Spuy in third position.
Winners of 42 kilometre men’s division were Sibusiso Magadeni in first place, Basil Mazibuk in second and Bongani Sabela in third.
In the women’s 42 kilometre division, Kim Hoatson came in first, Zelda Ackerman second and Bernadette Buss third.
