Eric to wrestle his way through Africa

Eric de Wet needs a sponsor to help him achieve his dream of qualifying for the Olympics.

For Eric de Wet, the new year is one of promise and high expectations.

This Cougar Wrestling Club wrestler was selected to participate in the Cadet African Continental Championships, which are to be held on February 3.

This comes after he was placed first in the trials, which were held in Northern Gauteng, during October.

He was then assigned to the provisional team, where he underwent the physiological and sports specific testing from November 17 to November 18.

Having passed the tests, Eric now faced the daunting challenge of defeating opponents from different wrestling clubs.

“I am excited at being selected, as this is a once in a lifetime opportunity,” Erica said.

Having been a wrestler for the past 10 years, Eric said he had always had one dream when it came to wrestling.

“A lot of people aim to reach the South African Championships, but my goal has always been to reach the Olympics.”

His dream of competing at the Olympic games might become a reality, as the upcoming championships was a qualifying event for the international sports tournament.

“I finally have an opportunity to qualify for the Olympics and achieve my dream.”

However, Eric’s dream comes at the cost of R23 000, which excludes his visa applications, clothing and accessories.
