Youngsters get a hockey crash course
Budding hockey players took to the St Doms AstroTurf on March 1.
The New Age Hockey Academy got formally under way last Wednesday evening.
Coaches and well-known hockey players, Dean Bond and Blessing Khumalo hit the ground running at the St Dominic’s Academy AstroTurf, with a budding group of players in tow.
After a brief introduction, it was on to the meat of the matter.
Young hockey players were taken through their paces, from ‘jungle runs’ to obstacle courses where deft footwork was required.
The pace was fast, but not impossible.
After running, jumping, juking and gauging their reactions, the first session of the academy drew to a close with the setting of the sun.
This is just the first of many to come.
Candice Bond, another stalwart of local hockey, said the aim of New Age Academy was to nurture and improve hockey, and grant children access to hone new skills.
The programme is designed for the different age groups, activity and skill levels.
Children signed up for the academy are required to bring a hockey stick, running shoes or togs, and shin pads to be eligible.
