Vryheid Rugby Club – Eagles dominate in Dundee
Swift-footed Sticks Mbatha scored a hat-trick of well-worked tries, showing off his exceptional speed against the home side.
VRYHEID Rugby Club’s first and second teams travelled to Dundee last Thursday to face off against Sentraal.
“Last year, the second team lost by one point and the first team held on to win by one point,” stated Head Coach, Rich Verster prior to the match. “Sentraal is a difficult customer on their own field,” he adds. “It’s going to be a cracking game…”
Verster’s prediction was slightly off, however, considering the mild thrashing the home teams received at the hands of Vryheid’s visiting squad.
The second team took to the field first, with Sentraal scoring first. From then on, according to Verster, Vryheid dominated the whole game, with two of the five tries coming from Kobie Marè, who played a great game according to the coach.
At the final whistle, Vryheid’s seconds snatched a comfortable victory, with the scoreboard showing Vryheid 27 – 5 Sentraal.
The first team was next and Verster describes the game as “troubled with penalties and discipline issues” with Vryheid dominating all set phases and plays. Vryheid scored eight tries, with Sentraal managing only one for the duration of the match, and Francois Scheepers converted five of the eight tries for the men in maroon.

Vryheid’s first team defeated Sentraal’s home side with a convincing win of Vryheid 50 – 5 Sentraal.
The next game will be the start of round two of the league and Vryheid will travel to Piet Retief to play their home side on Saturday.
“This will be a tough encounter,” warns Verster. “In round one against Piet Retief, Vryheid’s second team lost by a small margin, while the first team won by only a small margin.”
