SPORT: Newcastle Legends earn silver in soccer tournament

Despite the blistering sun beating down on players, Newcastle Legends rose to the challenge in defending its honour on home turf.

A vibrant atmosphere was palpable at Fernwood Sports Grounds on Saturday, September 16, as avid football enthusiasts geared up for the Over-50s Soccer Tournament.

With 11 teams from across KwaZulu-Natal gathering at the ground, it was apparent victory would not go to the faint of heart.

Despite the blistering sun beating down on players, Newcastle Legends rose to the challenge in defending its honour on home turf.

The tournament was arranged in a round robin format, with each team playing three matches.

In its first match against Umlazi, Newcastle Legends played to nil-nil draw.

Legends then faced Chatsworth, which also ended in a nil-nil draw.

In order to make it through to the finals, Newcastle Legends knew it had to dominate in its match against Pietermaritzburg Legends.

The team then secured a lead within minutes of the start of the match, continuing with a strong defence and attack.

The match ended with Newcastle Legends as the winners, beating Pietermaritzburg Legends with a two-nil scoreline.

The team faced Pietermaritzburg Midlands in the final, but lost by two goals to nil.

The Midlands team secured first position, while Newcastle Legends performed exceptionally well by finishing in second position.
