SPORT IN PICS: Athletes rise to the 10km challenge
The Newcastle City Athletics Club thanked sponsors and participants for making the day a success.
Athletes celebrated Heritage Day by putting on their running shoes.
Newcastle City Athletics Club hosted its first ever Amajuba 10km Challenge on Sunday, September 24.
“We looked at the history of the Amajuba battlefields, and thought Heritage Day would be the ideal time to commemorate our area’s history,” said spokesperson for the club, Muzi Ngema.
Avid athletes from the Amajuba District made their way to the old Monte Vista Casino at the crack of dawn to register.
While the fitness junkies gave it their all, enjoying the fresh morning air, victory was obtained by a select few.
In the men’s division, Nkosinathi Sibiya clinched first place, followed by Siphesihle Masondo and Bhekani Sithole in second and third places respectively.
Lindokuhle Gabela took the win in the woman’s division, with Xoli Madida in second place and Owethu Msibi in third position.
Due to overwhelming support, the club is excited about the marathon becoming an annual event on the sporting calendar. “Next year, we would like to make it a 21km challenge and then increase it to 56km the year after that,” explained Ngema.
