Newcastle Mall Kestrels makes debut in Premier League T20

Newcastle District Cricket Association has officially left its mark in the Premier League T20.
Newcastle Mall Kestrels travelled to Pietermaritzburg, to play its debut game at Linpark against Maritzburg Cricket Club (MCC).
Determined to secure a win, Graham Sharp and Arslan Butt played well, making 38 runs each. Sandile Hlatswayo had the best bowling figures, after he conceded only nine runs in his three overs, and also claimed a wicket.
However, a win was not on the cards, as MCC trounced the Kestrels by seven runs.
Moved to the Duck Pond, the Kestrels faced Masibemunye in its second game.
Hoping for redemption, the Kestrels produced a wonderful display of cricket by bowling its opponents out for 84 runs in 19.1 overs.
During the match, bowlers Graham Sharp, Arslan Butt and John Clark collected two wickets each.
While Newcastle’s Hussain Essop was bowled out in the first over, Sharp and Butt managed to save the situation by scoring 31 runs and 34 runs respectively.
Meanwhile, at the Arbor Park Sports Ground on Sunday, September 24, Warriors faced Highlands in a friendly.
Highlands were first to bat and were all out in 34 overs, having scored a total of 193 runs.
Preparing for the upcoming NDCA season, the two teams were eager to put their skills to the test.
Opening batsman, Connie Niewoudt, impressed the crowd by contributing 36 runs to the score.
Warriors then took to the field and topped Highlands’ score in 21 overs.
The victory was largely due to Jonathan Hartman’s score of 68 runs, and Johan Jacobs scoring a century.
The NDCA season will officially begin in October, with 12 teams vying for the trophies in the five competitions.
