SPORT: Bowling masters rise to the occasion

Excellent bowls was witnessed on both days and going into the last round, a number of players were still in contention in all sections.

Klipbank Bowling Club hosted the KwaZulu-Natal Preliminary Masters singles competition last weekend.

A total of 12 selected men and women did battle in two sections each, to determine who will qualify for main Masters later in the season.

Excellent bowls was witnessed on both days and going into the last round, a number of players were still in contention in all sections.

Sharon Nicholl (Empangeni Bowling Club) was the winner of section A (8 + 49), closely followed by Alta de Kock (Vryheid: 8 + 25).

Section B was won by Michelle Steele (Newcastle: 8 + 26) with Helga Kauz (Richards Bay) and Des Maarten (Klipbank) finishing in joint second (6 + 19).

The men’s sections were decided on the last few ends of a number of games, which kept spectators enthralled at the many permutations which changed as each game progressed.

In the end, section A was won by Jaco van Zyl (Richards Bay: 8 + 1), who made his debut in this competition.

Des Johnston (Dundee: 6 + 9) finished in second place, followed by Douglas Steele (Newcastle: 4 + 9) in third place.

Section B was won by Brendon van Vreden (Piet Retief: 10 + 30) who came from behind to win his final game 21 to 20, to remain unbeaten and just pip Mike Lovell (Empangeni: 8 + 34).

Danie Schoeman (Richards Bay: 6 + 22) finished third in this section.

The club Men’s Pairs was finalised a couple of Saturdays ago, and in a close game that could have gone either way, Lou Roux and Mike Hartman edged out Billy Nicholas and Anil Durgadin to annex the title.

Newcastle Bowling Club has sadly said its final farewells to two of its staunch members, Frans Schoon and Anil Durgadin, who both passed away recently.

They will be fondly remembered by all bowlers in the district – sincere condolences to the Schoon and Durgadin families.

The FedAuto Business League comes to an end this Thursday evening, with the final games played between the two sections.

With a number of teams vying for top places, competition will no doubt be keen with teams hoping to finish with a flourish.
