PREVIEW: Chris is swinging it on the fairways
“You can make a wonderful living by playing golf, but you have to practice to ensure you become good enough. ”
With a club in his hand and a ball on the ground, and nothing but greens ahead of him, 49-year-old Chris Khanyile is most certainly a legend on the local golf course.
Born and raised in Newcastle, Chris considered himself a well-behaved child who realised very early on in life he wanted to pursue golf as his preferred hobby.
“I started as a caddy 34 years ago at the Newcastle Golf Club. I was in Grade 3 at the time and this was for pocket money. In Grade 4, I decided to give up being a caddy and to actually learn how to play golf itself.”
A man called Mr. M.G Nkosi took Chris under his wing and taught him the technique of the sport.
“He gave me my first set of golf clubs and mentored me for years afterwards, showing me how to be one of the best forces on the greens with a starting handicap of 8.”
Chris considered himself a very competitive player.
He admitted he saw every game as an opportunity to better his handicap, which was currently at a three.
Not only did Chris embrace the sport on the fairway, he said he relaxed at home by watching golf as often as he could; a relaxation method which often caused a few arguments over the TV remote, he laughed.
When asked about his role model in the golf world, Chris said he looked to men such as Tiger Woods and Ernie Els for inspiration.
“They are both such amazing players and their skills are flawless.”
