Golfers raise funds for Gerrie Hugo’s cancer treatment
“No words will ever be enough express how grateful we are,” said an emotional Dalene Hugo on the success of the golf fundraiser held in aid of her son, Gerrie’s, cancer treatment.
A total of 74 golfers supported the golf day hosted at Kilbarchan Golf Club on Saturday, June 24.
The funds raised were enough to pay for one chemotherapy treatment that 47-year old Gerrie requires if he is to survive stage 4 melanoma.
According to Dalene, Professor Johann Jordaan of the Richards Bay Medical Institute prescribed three sessions of radiation and four chemotherapy treatments after medical experts discovered that the cancer had spread to the lymph nodes in Gerrie’s shoulder.
“The three radiation sessions have been completed and one chemotherapy treatment is done. Gerrie has three more chemo treatments to go before Prof Jordaan can assess the progress,” said Dalene.
“So far, the treatment is going well, but you never know with cancer. Cancer is another kettle of fish,” she added. “We still have a long and challenging journey ahead but the support of the Newcastle community keeps us strong.”
The idea to host a golf fundraiser was proposed by mall manager, Robbie Matthee and his brother Frikkie, according to Dalene. “After they approached us with the idea, we all got together to make it happen,” she said.
“We feel so blessed that everything just fell into place. At no stage, did we have to go around pleading for sponsors for prizes. Once people heard we were organising a golf day, they came forward. We can’t say, ‘thank you,’ enough,” concluded Dalene.
