Exciting turn out for bowls novice singles championships

The men's section winners were Peet du Bruyn, Jaco Lamprecht, and Brandon Delport, who then proceeded to play each other in another round-robin format.

Newcastle Bowling Club hosted their annual Novice Singles Championships last weekend. Entry is limited to players who have been members for three years or less, and it was pleasing to see nine men and six lady bowlers accept the challenge of trying to win the title.

Players were divided into sections of three, with a round-robin format following.

The men’s section winners were Peet du Bruyn, Jaco Lamprecht, and Brandon Delport, who then proceeded to play each other in another round-robin format.

Brandon and Jaco both won their first games, setting up a final game to determine the winner. Brandon continued his fine form to get the better of his gallant opponent to annex the title.

The ladies section winners were Megan and Nicola Redlinghuys, setting up an interesting mother-and-daughter final.

Megan started off strongly, taking a 10-3 lead before mom, Nicola, staged a comeback to be only 8-11 down.

Megan then changed gear again to move further ahead to win the game.

All players are to be congratulated on their play; as newcomers to the game, some excellent bowls were witnessed by an appreciative bank of spectators.

“Well done, all.”

The tabs in the Eagle Peak Spur competition played on Thursday morning saw the winners, Alice Howe, Sampie van den Berg, and Megan Redlinghuys, take home the prizes.
