Rainy weather fails to deter determined rugby enthusiasts

The weather created for tough conditions, but the Highlanders defeated the Flying Eagles 68-10 in the opening match.

Torrential rains could not dampen the spirits of avid rugby enthusiasts as Newcastle Boschpick Highlanders took on the Flying Eagles as well as the Secunda Emba’s this past Saturday (April 6) at the Arbor Park Sports
Grounds.

The weather made for difficult conditions, but the Highlanders managed to secure a whopping 68-10 win over the Flying Eagles during the opening match.

The main match against Secunda Embas went a little smoother as the weather seemed to calm down.

The Highlanders took charge from the beginning and led 28-0 by the end of the first half.

Coach Andrè ‘Swanie’ Swanepoel said the Highlanders out-scrummed the Embas with great lineouts despite the unfavourable weather.

However, their backline battled, scoring only two of the team’s seven tries.

Embas refused to go down without a fight and managed to score two great tries in the second half.

The game ended with a 45-14 victory for the Highlanders.

Swanie gave special mention of two forwards, Wynand Kritzenger (7) and Mkhize (6) who played very well.

The Newcastle Boschpick Highlanders will play two friendly matches this weekend.

Matches will take place as follows:

  • Friday (April 12) at 18: 30: Highlanders vs Flying Eagles
  • Saturday (April 13) at 15:00: Highlanders vs Bears.
