Newcastle karate-ka claim 16 medals at international tournament

Butokukan Newcastle members excelled at the 2025 TSKKIA All Styles International Tournament, securing 16 medals in Rustenburg.

Several members of Butokukan Newcastle were selected to represent Butokukan South Africa at the 2025 TSKKIA All Styles International Tournament, held in Rustenburg recently.

This tournament offered a variety of events for karate-ka to compete in.

Some of these events were:
Kata – traditional forms, Kumite – traditional semi-contact sparring, Kobudo (long weapons) – traditional long Okinawan weapons like Bo, Kobudo (short weapons) – traditional short Okinawan weapons like Kama, Creative Weapons Forms, Iaido (Japanese sword forms) and Kendo (Japanese sword sparring using a bamboo sword).

The Newcastle karate-ka did extremely well by bringing back a total of 16 medals from the tournament. The results were as follows:

Marc Burger:

  • Kata – silver
  • Kumite – gold

Kainan Chuang:

  • Kata – gold
  • Kobudo (long weapons) – gold

Joseph Sikhosana:

  • Kata – gold
  • Kumite – gold
  • Kobudo (long weapons) – bronze

Narine Venter:

  • Kobudo (long weapons) – bronze
  • Kobudo (short weapons) – gold
  • Creative Weapons Forms – gold
  • Iaido – gold

Frik Willemse:

  • Kobudo (long weapons) – silver
  • Kobudo (short weapons) – bronze
  • Creative Weapons Forms – gold
  • Iaido – gold
  • Kendo – silver
