Cyclists raise funds to build Malawi water wells
Cyclists and the Newcastle community joined the Tour de Malawi to raise funds for water wells, Malawi gain safe drinking water.
In collaboration with the Africa Muslim Agency (AMA), Newcastle cycling representative Jameel Butler and the local community hosted the Tour de Malawi on Sunday, September 7.
The event, which included a 5km walk and 10km run alongside the cycling challenge, aimed to raise funds for water wells in Malawi.
AMA’s effort will go towards constructing wells to bring clean water to a population where nearly four million lack access to safe drinking water. Since 1992, more than 12 200 wells have been constructed in rural and hard-to-reach areas.
The cost of one water well is R16 500, and Butler has appealed to Newcastle residents for donations.
“On behalf of AMA and the team, we thank our sponsors for their generosity,” Butler said. “Thanks go out to The Cannon Lodge, Trivs Emergency Services, OPS Security, Mi-Ka Fruit & Veg and Scott Street Pharmacy.”
