Newcastle shooters claim medals at IPSC World Shoot

The world of practical shooting descended upon Klerksdorp from September 11to 28, for the prestigious IPSC Handgun World Shoot, where the Newcastle Buffalo River Shooting Club proved their class with members bringing home an impressive haul of medals.

NKZN Practical Shooting Association’s development officer, Gerhard Lombard, said competition was fierce, drawing over 1,700 elite athletes representing 76 nations.

Celebrating the top performers:

Among the top performers were several local heroes representing South Africa with distinction.

Andre Van Straaten, competed in the demanding Grand Senior Classic division, and showcased exceptional skill and composure to secure a silver medal, finishing second in his category.

The South African teams also saw significant success.

Pieter Bouwer, representing South Africa in the Senior Open Team, contributed significantly to his squad’s performance, ultimately earning a second-place silver medal.

Not to be outdone, Jean Engelbrecht, competed in the Senior Standard Team, helped secure a commendable third-place bronze medal for his team.

The younger generation also showed their mettle, with FC Eicker from the Alwynkop shooting club in Dundee achieving a strong 10th place finish in the highly competitive Junior Production Optics division.

The achievements of these individuals underscored the high calibre of training and dedication fostered locally within the Northern KZN province.

The Northern KwaZulu-Natal Practical Shooting Association expressed their immense pride, not only in the medal winners, but also in the ten other local shooters who proudly participated at the world event.

These dedicated participants included Vincent Mortlock, Kajal Ragunanan, Malesha Ragunanan, Mahash Singh Ragunanan, Lin Ragunanan, Derich Eicker, Daniel De Beer, Cathy De Beer, Hendrik Coetzee, and the promising junior, Fc Ei cker.

“The performance by our Newcastle contingent at the World Shoot speaks volumes about their commitment,” an Association spokesperson noted. To compete against the best in the world and bring back multiple medals is a triumph for our club and the entire NKZN province.”

The IPSC Handgun World Shoot is one of the most challenging and highly regarded events in the sport, testing speed, accuracy, and power under intense pressure.
