Highlanders lose to Sasol Secunda despite strong effort

The final score was 34-5.

Newcastle Boschpick Highlanders went down 5-34 against Sasol Secunda on Saturday (April 25) in Secunda.

Late tries prove costly

It was a hard, tightly contested match for most of the game. However, two late tries by Secunda in the final five minutes made the scoreline more emphatic.

Highlanders will need to address their late-game lapses, as they have consistently conceded points in the closing stages of matches.

From kick-off, it was clear this would be a tough encounter. The first points only came in the 25th minute, when Sasol crossed for a try. By half-time, the hosts led 12-0.

After the break, the score remained unchanged until the 60th minute, when Sasol extended their lead to 19-0. Highlanders responded with a try by Moyane (15), narrowing the score to 19-5.

Young side shows promise

Despite the loss, Highlanders showed great determination..

“We have to take our opportunities in this Super League, which is tough, and play for the full 80 minutes, as we tend to fade in the last five minutes,” a team representative said.

“Although it was an away game, we should have taken some points from this match.”

Kheswa (6) delivered an outstanding performance, while Fats (23) made a solid impact after replacing Max (7) shortly after kick-off.

Highlanders held the upper hand in the scrums, with Daniel (2) anchoring well. Their line-outs were also effective, with Giraffe (8) securing clean ball and competing strongly on Sasol’s throws.

Sfundu (13) continues to show great potential, especially impressive for a player who left school only last year. Lwazi (9) also maintained his consistent form with another strong performance.

Points scored

Moyane (15) – 1 try
