The October Monthly Mug, sponsored by Nora’s Silks, was played last week Saturday afternoon in yet another blistering-hot gale-force wind. We wonder when the weather will eventually change to bless us with some rain, some cooler days and without a blistering gale on Saturday afternoons.
At one stage in the competition, our four-ball was actually debating as to whether the conditions were to be declared “unplayable”.
The game of golf is difficult enough without having to compete with the elements as we experienced last Saturday afternoon, but give credit to all the competitors in the event for gritting it out and playing through to the end. It is true to say that the wind does not affect a good stroke and the scores confirm that the really good ball-strikers can manage the wind and still return very respectable results in these conditions.
Winner of the ‘A’ Division Mug was Vernon Naidoo with an incredible score of 68 net, followed by Gerald Boardman with 69 net. The ‘B’ Division Mug was won by Gerhard van der Westhuizen with 71 net, followed by Balan Naidoo with 72 net. ‘Nearest the Pin’ winners were Bransby Niemach, Vernon Naidoo, Russell Goosen and Corné Stevens, with the ‘Longest Drive’ won by Bransby Niemach at the 9th hole with a drive that was over the green yet managed to stay in the fairway. Vernon Naidoo carded the Best Gross of the day. Retief Marais eventually made it through to the 18th and was declared the winner of the ‘Most Golf’ award on the day. Don’t despair Retief, at least you have qualified in some way for the ‘Mug of Mugs’.
Bransby Niemach, Vernon Naidoo, Carla Craffert and Thokozani Dladla carded two-clubs. Our thanks and appreciation go to Nora and Dave Simpson for the sponsorship of this Monthly Mug competition and we all continue to keep Nora in our thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery and a welcome return home soon.
