Black belts get tied up
Two locals earned their first Black Belt gradings recently.
Two young karateka have proven they possess the necessary discipline and talent to succeed in the sport. Stefan van Niekerk and Shaugne van der Watt from Northern KwaZulu-Natal JKA, passed their Shodan (first Dan) grading on October 18, before a panel of esteemed judges in Johannesburg.
The judging began with a gruelling three hour training session, including basics and various forms. Stefan and Shaugne were then entered into a pre-Dan course, during which participants were instructed on what to expect and what to focus on ahead of the judging. Both boys proved themselves worthy and capable of wearing their first level black belt.
Despite passing their grading, however, JKA tradition dictates a black belt may only be worn once prospective karateka undergo an initiation under the supervision of Sensei Johan Swart.
“Stefan and Shaugne’s spirit, guts and determination have earned them the right to wear their hard-earned black belts with pride,” Sensei Johan explained.
