Nail-biting action in Singles Champs
All the bowlers are to be congratulated on the high standard achieved, as it bodes well for Midlands to be a strong contender in the District this year
The remark most heard during the Singles Championships over the weekend was “That was a nail-biter”. This aptly describes the level of bowls which was played by the participants. All the matches were played in such good spirits and yet with determination to win, so being an onlooker was a rewarding experience. All the bowlers are to be congratulated on the high standard achieved, as it bodes well for Midlands to be a strong contender in the District this year. Numerous games ended on 21/20 or close to that, making for good bowls.
The results are as follows:
Ladies’ Senior Champion – Jill Atkinson of Bergville; runner-up – Veronica Malan of Klipbank. Men’s Senior Champion – Bennie Malan of Klipbank; runner-up – Arthur Virgin of Klipbank. Open Men’s Champion – Braam van Zyl of Harrismith; runner-up – Andries de Kock of Klipbank. Open Ladies’ Champion – Ida Oosthuizen of Harrismith; runner-up – Barbara Elworthy.
Thanks are due to greens-keeper Terry Crane and his staff for the good conditions of the playing surfaces, to barman Derek Goosen and his helpers for the supply of cold refreshments, to the caterers who assisted Janet Barnardo in keeping all the tummies well fed, and last but not least, competition secretary Magriet Coetzee for the smooth running of the championships.
